Antique KPM Style Porcelain Plaque'Lady as Vestal Virgin' Kaufmann painting #18
This gorgeous piece is from my collection of Religious art and icons. The facial features all seem to vary and some versions are much lighter than others... With several I have seen supposed to be depicting the Duchess of Devonshire as a Vestal Virgin. Most of those were made in mid to later 19th C. The overall features of the girl in my plaque is similar to a plaque painted by artist Franz Burghardt of Dresden around 1805. Dressed in a classical-style robe and veil and holding a Roman oil-lamp, the woman in the portrait appears in the guise of a vestal virgin: a priestess to Vesta, goddess of the hearth fire. In the eighteenth century many women had themselves portrayed as vestal virgins in order to be stylised as chaste and virtuous guardians of the family. Kauffmann's history portraits were frequently copied. There is writing on the back of my plaque - a series of penciled numbers 22625 and an impressed number 18. These early KPM plaques often only have a K and a single or double digit number.

I can not find other impressed numbers or marks with my 60 x microscope. Blue light shows no cracks or chips. There was probably a sticker on it at one time, most likely removed when it was framed, and this Black Forest/Victorian style frame is a gorgeous piece of hand carving, as you can see. The dimensions of the plaque itself are around 3 1/2" by 5" and it is inset in the mahogany wood frame that appears to have been made for it.

Carvings of grapes, fruit and leaves. The plaque is held in place with a thin sheet of mahogany wood that shows remains of very old artist type/masking tape inside the backing and some initials written in pencil which I assumed were of the frame maker. The outer frame dimensions are 6" wide by 7 1/4" tall, thickness varies from 1 to 1 1/4 and I put felt pads on back to protect the wall when hanging. There are no chips to the plaque and only minor expected wear along edges and here and there on the image.

A really wonderful version of this unusual portrait that has apparently been changed to reflect certain noble ladies.
