Bronze dore is also known as gilt bronze or ormolou and is basically a bronze box plated with a metal alloy coating to try and imitate gold. This pose was probably adapted from one of her many self-portraits by the artist who painted the plaque. The plaque is very well painted (it is 100% hand painted) by a very skilled artist. This piece has been in my personal collection since 1998 and the plaque has never been removed from the box.I find no other identifying makings on the obverse of the plaque other than what is shown in my photos of the plaque (the word Lebrun in hand painted script). The plaque is artist signed what appears to me to be Rau on the front, just above her left shoulder near where the plaque meets the box. I find no identifying markings of any type on the metal box. Regardless, it is a finely and skillfully painted antique porcelain plaque. A strikingly beautiful plaque, beautiful displayed in the bronze box frame and in great original condition! I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability. Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color. However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
Our store has many unique and interesting items in several different categories from 35 years of our dealing and collecting antiques and collectables. It is in excellent original condition. Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item. Everything appears to me to be original and intact.I see no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines or repairs to the porcelain and no evidence of use or wear to the porcelain. All I will mention is some tarnish to the metal box as well as some (about 3) minor dents to the bottom side of the box.
There are also some light signs of use to the underside of the box that are consistent with the age of the box. The box opens and closes as it should; the hinge is nice and tight and the clasp latches crisply as it should. Please keep in mind the photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times bigger in the photos than it really is. Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
The visible part of the porcelain plaque itself in the frame is about 3.25 (8.3 cm) top to bottom by about 2.5 (6.4 cm) left to right. Overall, the box is about 4.5 (11.4 cm) long by about 3.625 (9.2 cm) wide and about 1.625 (4.1 cm) in overall thickness. About 8.875 ounces (251 grams). On heavier items I will also offer a less expensive option, if available.
