A really nice and rare cup and saucer made by KPM around 1765. The set is hand painted with a superbly detailed scene with a ruin in a landscape background with some people and other building as well.
The designs are after etchings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-78). Only a handful of these pieces are known to still exist!
Nice gold trim as well and a flower arrangement to the inside of the cup. Typical handle shape of the period highlighted with pink and gilding. The set is in great condition with just a touch of wear to the gilding. A couple of small in the making flaws to the saucer well disguised as tiny birds in the sky. Both are marked underneath with the under glaze blue scepter mark as well as the usual impressed marks as shown.
The cup is 1.75 inches tall and 3.125 inches in diameter. The saucer is 1.125 inches tall and 5.25 inches in diameter. Germany Untertasse Unterteller 18th century.
